Interesting House Plans

One of the things that I like about living in San Francisco is the unique house plans. In a lot of areas in this country, people use their money to build mega-mansions. Rather than going for graceful, interesting houses that express something, they simply try to build the biggest, most expensive thing that they can to show off their wealth. For me, this isn’t the way to do it. The great thing about having some money is being able to express yourself in your living situation. A unique custom house plan can do this.

On the street that I live on, there are many different unique house plans to look at. You might see an Art Deco house right next to a traditional Tudor and beyond that, a house that looks sort of like an old-style barnyard except larger. Although I don’t like all of these unique house plans, (some of them are downright ugly) I do admire their willingness to take risks. And with risks, there are occasionally great acts of beauty.

You can see most of the unique house plans up in the hills. There are houses there that are built reflecting the workings of the great architect Frank Lloyd Wright. The designs of the houses are awesome and fit well with the surroundings. The houses have walkways, beautiful gardens, large windows, and other styles that make the houses unique.

Coming up with your own unique house plan is kind of difficult as I figured out myself. There are plenty of unique designs, but finding the perfect one can be a painstaking process. In my case, I had to look at well over a hundred different designs before I found the perfect unique house plan.

It actually was one of the plans I had initially considered, but when I looked at it in more detail it was perfect. It was spacious, interesting, and well-designed for entertaining in such a favorable climate. There is plenty of outdoor space surrounded by awnings which protect it from the wind. Since the weather is so mild there, this meant that I had the ability to entertain outside year-round. This is a great luxury for someone who enjoys inviting a lot of guests over to their house. I certainly have taken advantage of it since then.

Bedroom Make Over

So you finally moved to a new place, unpacked and everything is in its place. Your bedroom has matching shams and coordinating curtains, but something is missing. There is no heat. You know, the cozy feeling you get when you walk into the room and it feels like home.

Outside temperatures drop and more than ever, you want your bedroom to be comfortable. This is not just a place to sleep, but also a haven for your well-deserved quiet time. If your room tends to be on the side of cool, cut the chill with an electric fireplace. They are available in various sizes and styles, and along with the provision of additional heat, will help create a cozy atmosphere.

Adding delicate aromas instantly affect your mood and feelings, as you enter the room. Air fresheners, scented sticks and torches are all simple ways to solve this problem. Eucalyptus and lavender are calming, vanilla or cinnamon remind you of mom’s baking, and pine aromas have a great external effect. A fresh bouquet of flowers, especially in the dead of winter, helps to absorb stale air and create a pleasant feeling.

When it comes to bedding, choose a set you really like and use it as a focal point. Add coordinating pillows, shams and bed skirts, and spend money on thick blankets or a mattress pad. You will spend a considerable amount of time in bed, so make it comfortable and inviting.

If you have hardwood or other hard floor coverings, accessorize with a corresponding area rug to warm up your tootsies.

Flooring should cover enough to give you privacy and stay away from the bright sun in the morning, and to ensure warmth and character. If you have curtains, add some fabric in the form of side curtains or canopy.

Place a comfortable chair in a corner with a lamp and a small table. Ideally, place it near a window. Make this your holiday reading or meditation space.

Hang pictures of friends and family members or reserve a box for special gifts that you can look at from time to time. With the majority of our photos being digital these days, digital photo frames are lovely pieces to emphasize.

When it comes to light, how many bedrooms have one overhead fixture hung from the ceiling designed to illuminate the whole room? Strategically place floor lamps and sconces in the areas where you will read. Vary lighting depending on your mood with regulators. If your bed is the focal point, recessed lighting at the bedside with individual controls can be very effective.

To accent different areas of the room, track lighting is extremely flexible and easy to use.

Music goes a long way to create a relaxing atmosphere, whether for background music, waking up, or dozing off to sleep. Try a stereo or IPOD stand for just this purpose.

What Is Solar Power And How Does It Work?

We are now going to discuss the various types of systems used to produce solar power, starting with grid-tied systems.

Grid-Tied – A Definition.

A grid-tied solar power system (also referred to as grid-intertied, or on-grid or utility-interactive (UI)) produces solar electricity that is fed directly into the utility grid, hence the term grid-tied, as the system is tied, literally, to the grid. It’s very often the case, e.g. during the day on weekdays when most families are away from their homes, that a grid-tied system is still producing electricity, even though a very small amount, if any, is being used in the home. This surplus energy is then fed into the grid, offsetting a residence’s electrical consumption, and causing the electricity meter to rotate backwards, resulting in the account with the utility company being credited with that amount of energy (this is known as net metering or net billing, and is not offered in all states).

Components Of A Grid-Tied Solar Electric system.

1. Solar Panels

Also identified as solar modules or photovoltaic (PV) panels, this is where all the the ‘supernatural’ of converting solar energy into solar power (or electricity) begins. Briefly, this refers to the scientific process by which solar energy is converted into electricity.

One panel by itself will not produce a great deal of power as far as running household appliances, etc., is concerned, so, more often than not, multiple panels are combined to provide the required amount of power.

2. Mounting Racks.

Mounting racks are used to secure PV panels in place and to ensure they’re correctly directed, i.e. facing south wherever possible to gain the maximum amount of solar energy. Depending on the amount of space available, obstructions, etc., 3 types of mounts are available: 1) poles that are set in concrete; 2) rooftop (the most common in urban districts ); 3) ground (usually only an option where plenty of land is available).

3. DC Disconnect.

This is used to securely disconnect the flow of electricity from the PV panels in case of current overload.

4. Inverter.

The inverter takes the raw DC power produced by the solar panels and converts it to usable AC (alternating current) power, which can then be fed into the utility grid, and, subsequently, available to power household appliances, lighting, etc., since they all run off AC power.

5. AC Breaker Panel/Inverter AC Disconnect.

The breaker panel is where, as they say, “the twain shall meet”, i.e. the electrical wiring of a dwelling connects to the power supply, whether it is the grid or the solar energy system. It contains labeled circuit breakers used for both maintenance purposes and to protect the wiring from fires, etc.

6. Kilowatt Hour Meter.

In the case where a house has a grid-tied solar electric system, most utility companies provide a bi-directional meter at no cost that can measure both the electricity being returned into the grid as well as being pulled out of the grid. As you can notice, there’s not a great deal in terms of complexity to a grid-tied solar power system, but the profits and savings it can provide are far-reaching.

Hemp And The Benefits As A Fuel Source

Hemp is a product which is continually shrouded in debate. It should be made clear that industrial hemp and marijuana are completely separate plants. Hemp through the ages has been a integral part of human progress. Hemp has by tradition been used for thousands of years to make rope and textiles. For example, in ancient China, due to the magnitude of hemp, every farmer was required to grow hemp along side their central crop. Hemp has many different uses other than to produce textile and rope. Hemp is also a food product and can be processed into plastics and interior car panels. Hemp is also a perfect energy resource, particularly in pellet form.

Learn more about Pellet Mill

Hemp is a very fast growing biomass substance, it only grows for 3 months of the year, and returns superior yields than all other wood species and many other biomass energy resources such as switchgrass and miscanthus. Not only is hemp a faster developing biomass than these other resources, it is also a better fuel.

Not all biomass fuel sources burn the same, different types of biomass produce different amounts of ash, corrosion, and clinker and slag formations. These obviously create issues during combustion and therefore most pellet stoves and boilers cannot handle many biomass fuels. Hemp on the other hand is very different. Hemp produces very low ash content, is non-corrosive and does not cause issues such as clinker and slag formations in the burn chamber. It is therefore very easy to produce a high quality fuel from a very fast growing biomass feedstock. The best way to take advantage of hemp as an energy source is to upgrade the hemp into pellets.

Hemp pellets are simply a compacted form of the original hemp feedstock. Through pressure and heat the hemp is changed into pellets. These pellets have a much higher density, and thus much higher combustion effectiveness. This increased combustion efficiency means far less smoke and ash is produced during and after burning. The pellets can also be made on small sized equipment, meaning the whole process of growing the hemp and processing can take place locally. Keeping the cycle local is not only beneficial in terms of less hauling and cheaper fuel prices, it also benefits the environment. Less transportation means less CO2 is placed into the environment.

Hemp over the next few years should be taken more seriously as the significant resource it truly is. Currently in many countries, growing industrial hemp is still illegal based on propaganda outlawing the plant from the wood industry as it was a superior product in the paper industry.

Information On Pellet Stoves

Home owners have noticed their heating bills going up over the last few years. This rise in energy prices for oil and gas has been due to various political issues and other reasons. The price of our energy is outside our government’s control, and ours, and future price increases are inevitable.

Many people therefore have taken a proactive approach and installed pellet stoves to heat either their living rooms or their entire house. Pellet stoves can save the owner money, however some people choose them to play their part in reducing global warming.

Pellet stoves are both an environmental and cheaper fuel alternative. The pellets are made from softwood and hardwood waste products, which are then compressed to form small pellets. These pellets are uniform in size, shape, and density. The stoves then have a standardised fuel, which they can use. The uniform features of pellets is this key, as pellet stove designers can design their systems around the pellet features. The moisture percentage of pellets is also very low, which is much lower than wood logs for example. As pellets are denser than logs and have lower moisture content they burn far more efficiently. This increased efficiency has several benefits in terms of more heat generated for the user and less maintenance. Maintenance will be removing the ash and cleaning the heat exchanger tubes to obtain maximum heat transfer. Some pellet stoves are so efficient and have advanced features they only require maintenance every few weeks.

All pellet stoves share several features and characteristics. First, each stove has a pellet hopper. The size of the hopper depends on the brand and the rated heat output of the stove. Generally the size of the hopper will be designed to provide the stove with enough heat for at least a day, with some stoves providing fuel for up to a week. An auger is positioned at the bottom of the hopper, this auger takes pellets from the hopper and deposits them into the burn pot. The speed of the auger and timing is controlled by the stove to feed pellets when required, to obtain the chosen heat value. The stoves have a hot rod self ignite, which means the stoves can self ignite. This ability means the stove can be set-up on a timer or thermostat to provide heat when the user desires. Some pellet stoves today can even receive a start-up demand from a mobile phone, to heat the house for when the owner gets home.

Pellet stoves serve as a compact, low maintenance means to provide efficient heat. Check what type of pellets the stove can use before purchasing, as some stoves will struggle to burn higher ash content pellets.

Going Solar – Who Is Who?

You’ve made the decision to go with solar energy for your energy needs. In going solar, you need to know who is who. Let’s take a closer look.

Who is Who?

Companies in the solar energy industry come in two main forms. One set provides the systems you need to produce solar energy on your own. A much smaller subset will sell you a form of clean energy.

If you want to skip putting solar panels or shingles on your home, you need to find a company that will sell you power just like a utility. Unfortunately, there isn’t any nation wide company that solely provides solar electricity to customers. If you’re willing to look a bit broader, Green Mountain Energy Company may be for you.

Green Mountain Energy Company is a “cleaner electricity” company. It only buys power produced from wind, solar, biomass, water, geothermal and natural gas. The power is then fed into regional power grids and you tap it from there. The advantage of Green Mountain is you are using cleaner power than a typical utility company, but not completely clean as you find when generating solar power yourself. The biggest downside to Green Mountain is you are still paying utility bills, often more than you would pay to the utility company in your area. That being said, Green Mountain is really the only company of its type.

When people refer to providers, more often they are discussing manufacturers and installers of solar energy systems. In the case of solar energy, there are a few big industry leaders.

BP Solar is one of the largest producers for solar energy solutions for residential, commercial, and industrial platforms throughout the world. The company is a true leader in the field and provides simplified solutions for homeowners by combining the sale of solar energy systems with full installation. A very popular company with many homeowners.

Somewhat surprisingly, General Electric is one of the biggest producers of solar energy solutions. The company offers high end commercial solutions and custom made solutions using crystallized silicon solutions. It also offers pre-packaged systems for residential homes.

On the other end of the scale, Uni-Solar is the creator of the new solar roof shingles that are gaining popularity with consumers, businesses, and government agencies. The shingles sit flat on homes like regular roof shingles, getting rid of the bulky solar panel appearance. The Uni-Solar product is considered a fairly major break through in solar power.

Solar companies come in all types and forms. You can visit our site to find companies in your area that provide the particular solar solutions you need.

Things To Think About For Bathroom Remodeling Projects With Restoration Hardware

Is your bathroom a place of beauty or something you hope to hide from your house visitors ? If it embarrasses or annoys you, now is the time to think about remodeling. Consult with the leading design contractors to help you find the products you want and need for this plan. Think about what you wish you had, what actually needs to be modified and what features you already have that you cannot live without. Some things to consider are color, material, features, and budget. You may wish to consider products such as designer knobs and antique restoration hardware.

Color

Color palettes in custom remodeling projects do not only cover fixtures, but coordination with walls, floors and ceilings. Paint is simple to match to fixture colors. Wallpaper is another opportunity. Try coordinating or contrasting essential colors with neutral or softer tones. Consider the color of towels and accessories that will be used in the bathroom. See what color towel sets are offered in your preferred department store. Finding the right shade of aqua or burgundy can be annoying. By using neutrals in your color palette, white, beige or pastels it will be easier to match your new decor. Also make sure the finish of the bathroom hardware is inline with the rest of the materials like tiles etc. For example, do not install a Brass towel bar and antique bathroom hardware together.

Material

Long ago all floors were made of tile and all bathtubs were made of porcelain. Modern materials are durable, easier to clean, and do not have moisture problems. Options include stone, ceramic or vinyl flooring. Special grout is now available to prevent cracking and popping with everyday use. Bathtubs and showers come in a variety of materials as well. The popularity of acrylic is growing, since it is not cold to the touch when you step in and it maintains bathwater temperature longer. The material is light and works well in an upstairs bathroom area. Heavier materials, such as cast iron or stone, are more appropriate for downstairs bathrooms.

Features

Choosing between a shower or bathtub can be a tough decision, often depending on your personal preference and on how much room you have. Remodeling your bathroom should create a place of comfort and privacy. Add whirlpools, heat lamps, fans, dressing tables and accessories to produce a place of luxury and comfort. Correct lighting in a bathroom is essential in a remodeling project. Use more than one light source to improve the room. Utility is important as well. When using the area to apply cosmetics or shave, you need to be able to see what you are doing.

Budget

While some features may cost more than others, making changes all at once while doing interior remodeling can be cheaper than making additional changes later. Prices vary greatly on fixtures and faucets. Select those that match the fashion and mood of the pieces in the bathroom. High quality materials require elegant faucets. They do not have to be expensive to look nice, but better quality plumbing products last longer. In any case make sure to use only the highest quality fixtures from the top brands so that your work will last a lifetime.

Solar Power System

Energy from the Sun

A Solar power system is the process of using the light from the sun and turning it into an energy source.

It has become a reliable alternative to regular power sources in remote areas. It has even been used in outer space. Solar power is used in homes, lighting, architectural projects, and cooking. It has become even more popular as the cost of fossil fuel continues to rise. Solar panels are designed to collect the power from the sun.

Once solar energy is collected by the solar panels it has to be converted into energy. This can be done by a process called solar thermal application. It involves using the energy from the sun to directly heat air or liquids. The process of photoelectric application involves the use of photovoltaic cells to change the energy into electricity.

Solar power poses no harm to the environment. However, other threats to the environment may affect the ability to use a solar power system in the future. Global dimming is the result of pollution. It allows less sunlight to reach the surface of the Earth. Global dimming is caused by pollution particles and global warming.

The Solar Electric Power Association is an organization of electric utility companies and the solar industry. They joined together to find solutions to meet our energy needs. SEPA is a network of more than one hundred companies. Fifty are utility companies, twenty five are solar companies, and the rest are various types of businesses. They share experiences, knowledge, and information about solar programs, They also discuss policies and technology relating to their field.

Is solar energy right for you? There are advantages to using this as a safe alternative to fossil fuel. Solar energy is free.

It can be used in areas where electricity can’t be set up easily. The sun is not a resource that is going to be depleted anytime soon.

Disadvantages are that it doesn’t work at night. The cost of creating solar power stations to store such energy is very expensive. In some areas of the world, solar energy just isn’t an option because the climate does not receive enough sun light.
