Building A Shed In Your Garden? What You Need To Know Before You Start.

Garden sheds are typically smaller than storage sheds and designed specifically for your gardening gadgets and tools. With so many different styles available today, it’s not hard to find one that’s perfect for your taste and gardening needs.

Garden storage sheds are a great addition to any garden or lawn. Not only will they help keep your tools organized, they also add a touch of style. For example, you can add flower boxes at the shed’s windows, and add some colorful plants that will attract the eye.

Garden sheds range in size from 4′x 6′ all the way up to 10′ x 8′. They also come in a variety of shapes to enhance any style garden.

Depending on the size of the shed, you can store all your gardening tools such as mowers, rakes, shovels, wheel barrows, hoes, water hose, pots, soil, seeds and so on. Some gardening sheds come with shelves that help keep the structure nice and tidy. Others come with hanging racks making the ultimate storage space for everything including folding lawn chairs, patio tables and more freeing up room in your garage and home.

Having a garden shed also adds to the beauty of your lawn or garden. Garden buildings aren’t just made of metal or plastic anymore. They now come in materials such as cedar and pine adding to the natural beauty of your garden or lawn.

I have a garden, which means that I have a lot of garden tools. It is the usual collection of wheelbarrow, spades, forks and hoes. As well as those larger tools I have a lot of small hand tools and of course a lawn mower. Now, all of these tools cry out for their own garden shed, so I decided to build my own.

I have done quite a bit of research into garden sheds and have came across some good designs. What I have learned is that there are a few common elements to take into account when building your own shed. For instance, what about the snow?

It may not seem like it, but snow can be very heavy especially if a lot of it lands on your garden shed roof. The answer is to build a roof with a fairly steep pitch which should help the snow to slide off.

Another thing to consider is the security of your shed. I have paid a lot of money over the years buying all my garden tools, especially my lawn mower. I had never thought about someone wanting to steal my tools, but there is a good market for second hand garden tools. The next time you visit a flea market or car boot sale, keep an eye out for second hand tools and ask yourself if they could be your tools up for sale. So making a good secure shed with a heavy door and padlock was sure important to me.

Finally, I have learned that a shed can get very hot in the summer. The extra heat that builds up can cause damage to certain tools, especially electrical ones. The answer is to include some roof vents and these are actually quite easy to include in your shed design. My outdoor garden shed is certainly worth having and makes me happy every time I look at it, and you will be just as proud of your own self-built shed.
