If you’re like me, you can’t stand it when any room in your home is a disorganized mess. That goes for the basement and the garage as well. Unfortunately, due to long hours at work and a new baby, both the basement and the garage are in total disarray. The garage in particular is a mess. It has become difficult to move around or even retrieve things that are located towards the back wall. It is time to take action.
We don’t use our garage for car storage because, well frankly, there is no room in there for one. The garage is a place for storage, it seems, for everything but a car. All of our outdoor equipment, lawn mower, air compressor, tool cabinet, my prized commercial pressure washer, and assorted other garden tools are in there. Most times this stuff is fairly well organized but not when a lot of other junk has accumulated in the garage. In the winter, especially after Christmas, the garage seems to get filled with so many things. Right now there is an old sofa, an old 27 inch television, which was replaced by a flat screen on Christmas, and four bicycles.
The first order of business is to throw away whatever we will not ever be using again, including the sofa and television. Even though the television still works, I know we’ll never use it again. There are two TV’s in the house and that is plenty. The bulk garbage collection in my neighborhood is on Thursday so now that the weather has broken I’ll have my neighbor help me put the sofa and TV on the curb Wednesday night. I even put a small sign on the television stating that it is still in good working condition figuring that someone may pick it up before the garbage men take it away.
A lot of large boxes and other packaging also piled up over the fall and winter. I simply cut up and bundled all of the cardboard boxes for recycling. Now there is some space to work with in the garage. I purchased a wall mounted rack at Sears to hold all of the brooms, rakes, shovels, etc. along the rear wall of the garage. This makes a huge difference, now all of those items are off of the floor and out of the way. I also bought a neat pressure washer hose reel which is also mounted on the wall. There were several pieces of lumber in the corner from past projects around the house which was taking up a lot of space. I built a rack along the rear wall to hold the lumber.
What a difference. The garage is neat and clean, and there is plenty of space to maneuver in there. Now that I can see the floor, I can tell that it needs a new paint job. I purchased two gallons of garage floor paint and will paint the floor as soon as the weather gets a bit warmer.

Looking For a Good Wood Working Plan?
Wood working plans are grouped by project type. There are many sources of wood working plans for the homeowner. With a good set of plans someone without a lot of wood working experience can achieve excellent results. Once you complete your first successful project you will want to build many more. Each project that you complete will increase your confidence and level of expertise making each new project even more rewarding than the last.
You need to consider several things before beginning any wood working project. The first and most important is picking a good plan/blueprint. A good plan will lay everything out in detail leaving nothing to the imagination.
The second thing to consider is the complexity of the plan. Make sure you aren’t starting out with a plan that is so complicated that even an experienced wood worker would have a difficult time.
Make sure you can follow the plan before starting. Make sure you have all the required tools. If not, are you willing to spend the extra money necessary to have the required tools? Make sure you are willing to commit the time necessary to complete the project.
Wood working plans can also be grouped based on quality. Ideally, they should be well laid out and contain sufficient detail. They should have good pictures and illustrations. The more pictures and illustrations the better! You’ve heard the old saying – a picture is worth a thousand words. Well, this is especially true when you are trying to build something for the very first time. All the explaining in the world can’t provide as much insight and understanding as a good picture or plan.
Most word working plans even come with what is called a cut list. This is a list of all the lumber needed for the project with instructions on how to cut every board. Cutting the lumber in advance of assembly makes the job much easier. Plus you can paint everything before its put together. It is much easier to paint a piece of lumber when it is laying on a sawhorse than it is after everything is assembled and you need a ladder to reach the boards 10’ off the ground.
There are many websites on the internet which provide online wood working plans. You can even find some free plans on the internet. Typically, internet plans allow you to download the plans to your computer where you can save them and print them for your own use.
If you are new to wood working you will probably want to start with something small and not too complicated. Then, as your skill increases, you can take on larger more complex projects. Soon you’ll be building items that will make you neighbors envious.
Just remember, the most important item in any wood working project is a good detailed, well illustrated plan!

2. You will be able to modify the area with small disruption to the rest of your home as with a house additions also.
3. You may already have the electrical wiring in place (most garages have lights and at least one electrical outlet)
as well as plumbing.
4. Depending upon local building codes, you may not need a building license for your project.
Why would you require a building permit? Virtually anyone building a extreme makeover home addition needs a permit. This can vary from one location to another, but the primary issues are:
* Structural soundness
* Exits
* Heating and cooling
* Windows
* Ventilation
* Insulation
* Plumbing
* Electrical
In some areas, malfunction to build to local code can require that you restore the space to its original condition before you sell the house.
The most excellent place to start remodeling a garage to a room is to find out what you have to work with in terms of ground, walls, access, etc. You will probably have a cement slab floor and an adequate roof. If there are no windows, you will need to decide whether to install them, how many to install, and where you will place them. If your garage has finished walls you will need to determine whether the walls are insulated. If they are not insulated, you will need to make decisions about how you will insulate. You will have to to plan for heating and cooling and adequate lighting and electrical outlets. Do you need plumbing in the room? If so, you will have to determine whether there is or is not plumbing in the area and what changes are required.
Your next decision will be whether to use the whole garage for your fresh room or only part of it. If you have a two-car garage, you might decide to finish only half of it into living space. In this case, you might require to pay additional attention to soundproofing.
Changed garages can serve a variety of functions. Garages can be converted into the whole thing from a kitchen to a living room or a family room, den, home theater, home office or an extra bedroom. You might discover enough “attic” space to close two rooms (one above the other) or to open the ceiling and plan your new room with a domed ceiling.
The next decisions will decide the form of the finished room.
1. What kind of flooring will you use? You will find that a slab is favorable to just about any kind of flooring you choose to install. Be steady to seal the slab before you begin installation of any flooring resources. And, if you
set up carpet, you might want to invest in double padding to make the room more at ease. You can also build a traditional joist floor over the garage slab to match the floor level in the rest of your home.
2. What kind of ceiling do you want? Depending upon the planned use of the space, you might choose a vaulted, exposed beam ceiling, a pitched ceiling, a tray ceiling, a drywall ceiling, or a drop ceiling.
3. Finally, you will need to decide on the walls. You can choose paneling or sheetrock, or you might want to take into account constructing the walls of insulated board. If the room will be used as a playroom or a home office, this might be just the solution you require.
Finally, you will need to decide whether to do the work yourself or appoint a contractor. You might choose to hire a contractor for a few of the work, like electrical, plumbing, etc. and do the leftovers yourself. Whichever way, you’ll observe that the cost of converting your garage to living space is far less than adding a room to your home.
A garage conversion is a vast remodeling project. It’s the ideal way to get the space you need at the minimum achievable cost.
