In remodeling your house, you should first consider how far your budget can go. And if you think your resources will not really allow you to go on with the project, you need to delay the work first while saving up for the required money.

Once you are ready to renovate, and you really want to make your home look refurbished, focus on the kitchen and bathrooms. These two rooms in your house are the priciest to remodel, hence upon finish, your house will appear to have more value.

Sometimes remodeling does not mean outright tearing down of the walls and ceilings. You only have to add some fixtures such cabinets, shelves or a window. Repainting can be a good way of remodeling your house without necessarily reconstructing anything.

You want to remodel your house, or at least give it a new, fresh look. You have laid out your plan and have filed for a leave from your work. You even solicited the help of your spouse and he happily agreed. You are ready and set to start on the renovation, but you are constrained by your budget.

In this case, you still can freshen up and give your home a touch of newness. Refurbishing does not only entail carpentry work. You don’t have to hire the services of a contractor at all. All you need is some imagination, a few pieces of interior decors and perhaps a new shade of paint. Hanging paintings on the wall, draping fresh curtains on the windows and re-varnishing furniture can give your home a totally different look without going through the pains hiring an expensive remodeling team.

Some house remodeling tasks can either be undertaken by the owners themselves or contracted out to professionals or experts on the field. Which ever way the owner wants the task done, before starting any remodeling project, the first thing to be considered is the estimation of the cost.

To approximate the cost, the house owner must be able to compare prices among various outlets from where he will be making purchases of the materials to be used. This way he is able to get the most out of his money. In other cases too, the house owner, in order to save himself the time, may just entrust the cost estimation to his contractor.

It’s true that remodeling your house on your own can save you the cost of hiring a professional contractor. However consider the hassles that come along with doing the project by yourself.

First, you are not an expert on the matter. You are not very knowledgeable about economical ways of using materials available. In the end, you might be dismayed to find yourself spending more than what you expected. Second, since you are not an expert on the matter (unless you are an architect or engineer) you might not be able to competently meet the time frame of your project. This will create a problem later on especially when you find out you have spent almost all of your vacation days and yet your house remodeling project is only half way through.

If you happen to visit a home furnishing shop, you might be astounded to find out so many new and modern and lovely designs for bathrooms, it can be confusing which one to pick. But don’t be too carried away by the amazing displays you see in these shops. Be prudent.

Firstly, make up your mind about your purpose in remodeling your bathroom. Why do you want to remodel it anyway? Is it for convenience and comfort? Or is it plainly to satisfy your want for aesthetics? These questions will guide you in selecting and deciding which bathroom fixtures and design you really need and want.

When the architecture and design come together known as the field of interior design is born. If you need to do some Furnishings, there are several important points to keep in mind. The fact that the coordinated space, which is harmony, in which architecture, space and its functions are gathered to make the most functional rooms being aesthetically pleasing. Colors, lighting, textures and proportions are important for this task. Choice, quality of furniture, as Barlas Baylar or Brancusi, is another important step.

Let’s start with the lighting and color scheme. Both should complement the architecture used in space and it should set the tone for the room. If the room will be used primarily for television and video games that lighting is not a big problem. If this room instead of the reading room is the amount of sunlight and lighting in general is becoming much more point of interest. If the room is the last college graduates bedroom it is possible that blue is not the best choice of color. If the room is a blue boy’s bedroom can be the best choice.

Texture is another point that must be addressed. If the room will be used as a living room and then a rough texture should be avoided while the soft, inviting texture should be the maximum. However, if the room is made for children’s Playroom, the wit and whacky colors are acceptable.

Now you need to get high quality furniture to the room complete. Furniture will be used on a daily basis, so that the choice of furniture, sophisticated and well built, such as Barlas Baylar or George Nakashima, is important. Make sure that it is proportional to the room. You do not want a long dining table in a small room. This will make the room uncomfortable. Furniture must fit comfortably such a number is not empty, it would seem, neither it closely. You also want furniture compliment the criteria listed above. For example, if the carpet from the room is gray, gray sofa, probably a bad idea.

Another great decoration tips for the place your furniture is not more than 3 feet. When sitting down to a new modern sofa or chair, with a glider Madison Living, photos and frequently used items should be placed as close to eye level as possible. If you hang large pieces of work, always remember to place them on large pieces of furniture. Above all, remember to arrange your rooms with amenities, accessibility, and warmth in mind.

These are the general ideas of interior design. Much of this may seem logical, but easy to lose sight of the basics of design time begins. For a beginning, you should start focusing on the purpose of the room. After that, proportion, texture and color are important. Finally, the quality of products on behalf of, as Everythingfurniture.com, beat the room (s). This is your house so make it well-situated and pleasurable for you and your guests.

In case you want to get some carpet cleaning for your home before the holidays begin, and if you are in Illinois, then you could look at the Naperville Carpet Cleaning company to manage your task. With a record of 8 whole years in the carpet cleaning business, there’s a very slim chance of this company not satisfying you. A lot of people who are in the carpet cleaning business are doing it as a hobby, but these guys mean serious business. All those years of experience behind them indicates that they know what they have to do. Cleaning carpets and rugs isn’t as simple as it seems. Sometimes, it takes a lot of specialization and effort, especially when you need to take out obstinate stains without spoiling the fabric or the color of the carpet. That is the reason a lot of people employ expert carpet cleaners.

Carpet Cleaning Naperville has been providing its stellar services for all kinds of carpets in homes as well as in offices. They also provide services for cleaning area rugs. They also have a special expertise in cleaning grouts and tiles. You could actually enter into a contract with them and have them clean the upholstery in your house as well. The best part of having such a contract deal is that you don’t have to deal with two different companies for your housecleaning needs, at least for the upholstery. These people will sign a contract with you to handle the cleaning of your floor coverings as well as your wall and other draperies.

The Naperville Carpet Cleaning company handles their job with a lot of sophistication. It begins with a primary inspection to identify the precise method of cleaning that should be employed. The next step is to set up the area by moving the furniture and other stuff from the place. A preliminary spraying process begins the treatment. The carpet fibers are agitated before the actual treatment begins so as to remove the loose dirt. A rinsing treatment is done next, which is done with very pure water. There is a follow-up spot treatment done in order to remove spots that still remain. They wrap the treatments up by grooming the fibers back to what they were when they started out. A concluding inspection is done to see if everything is all right.

Probably the best part of hiring them is their referral program, where you get some rewards for referring new clients to them. You get 10% of the client’s bill as your referral. Naperville Carpet Cleaning thus provides you with a great cleanup job and impressive rewards as well.

This is one of the best Naperville Carpet Cleaning company, you can contact them via www.cicarpetcare.com. They give professional service that over 1,000 clients have happily left their testimonials.

Common Mistakes in Designing Your Own Home

Most mistakes made in designing your own home come from the planning stage. The lack of planning during the planning stage can result in some fairly common mistakes that when revisited by the designer seem rather simplistic. Budgeting is also a big area where common mistakes occur.

Planning Mistakes

Determining which way the home will face on the building site. This is seemingly simple enough but often times over looked. It is important especially if the building site butts up to someone else’s property or to someone else’s home. There are actually building codes in place regarding placement of bathrooms when a home is built next to another one.

So the design needs to take into consideration where the home will be placed on the building site. This element also affects where the driveway will be placed, whether there will be road access and whether the entrance to the home will look natural or unnatural. Another factor to consider is which way the natural light will fall on the house; this will affect heating/cooling costs. Make sure the site is well suited for building before the designing begins. It is no surprise that many pieces of property cannot support the size of the home being built. Every community has building codes and ignoring these codes or not knowing them can foil a design plan. So to avoid this common mistake check building codes in the area the home is to be built to insure the design is well suited to meet the codes or requirements of the area.

Not spending enough time on the design is also a common mistake. Every hour spent designing the home is two hours saved on the building site in corrections. Expect revisions as most home designs go through a series of revisions before the final plan is drawn up. Spend the time that is needed on the design plan. Make sure that there is an availability of materials for the project. If the home design is for a specific type of constructed home from a semi-exotic material make sure that there is an availability of that material. Not taking into consideration plumbing, electrical, or a heating and cooling apparatus is also a common design mistake. Getting distracted by aesthetics and not considering the functionality of the space will cost you money during the building phase of the project. Again knowing the codes for plumbing, electrical, heating and cooling is important. Check to make sure there are no special requirements for the building site such as a home owners association in the area you intend on building that may have special by laws for that neighborhood. Failing to check with the home owner association (if there is one) can be a huge mistake because some by laws instituted by developments can regulate the size, shape, and other factors of what can and cannot be built. Plan ahead and avoid what can be avoided.

Budgeting

Budgeting is another area where common mistakes occur in designing your own home. Budgets cannot be so stringent that there is no room for error. A safe bet is to add $20000 to the budget for errors. Perhaps the $20000 will wind up not being used, but more than likely some of it will be used. Underestimating costs is also a common mistake. To avoid this error overestimate the costs so that when designing your home you will not be put out on a limb financially. Be realistic about the budget so you can avoid common mistakes in designing your own home.

First, this article presumes the readers’ understanding of the necessity for inter-disciplinary designers to be familiar with classical architecture. This article is intended to provide a general overview of the subject. Images are provided to supplement this text, and whenever possible, sources are credited.

History

Classical architecture is not so much a style as it is an approach to building in a trabeated (post-and-beam) manner. It originated in Greece, Herculaneum, Pompeii, Rome, and other areas of Greek and Roman conquest, and is widely accepted as the first Western building tradition. James Stevens Curl states that to be classical, something conforms in style, composition, or both to the rules or models of Greek and Roman antiquity. [1]

Classical architecture, like most architectural languages, began with the primitive hut, which, through refinement and ingenuity, eventually developed into post-and-beam construction. [2] Many centuries later, the refinements developed into the classical language, providing us with what we now understand to be Orders.

One of the characteristics of classical architecture, which you will find time and again upon closer inspection, is the tri-partition of the language at all scales; bottom, middle, top; beginning, middle, end (which is a logical progression when telling a story or explaining how to do something). Each Order consists of a pedestal, a column, and an entablature. In turn, pedestals consist of a plinth at the bottom, a dado or die in the middle, and a cornice at the top. A column has a base, a shaft, and a capital. The entablature has an architrave, a frieze, and a cornice. These can, in most cases, be reduced even further into three parts.

There are five canonical Orders, or primary expressions of classical architecture, most easily identifiable by their associated columns. These are the Tuscan, Doric, Ionic, Corinthian, and Composite (in order of sophistication). From ancient Greece we have received the Greek Doric, the Greek Ionic, and the Corinthian Orders. From Rome, the Tuscan, Roman Doric, Roman Ionic, and Composite Orders were born. There are many versions of the Orders provided by well-versed architects throughout history, the most significant architect being Vitruvius, whose De Architectura, also known as the Ten Books on Architecture, is the only surviving text delineating the Orders from antiquity (ancient Rome; he dedicated his tome to Caesar Augustus). Alberti was the first to canonize the Composite Order in 1452, Serlio was the first to canonize all five Orders in 1537, Vignola followed in 1562, Palladio in 1570, Scamozzi (who canonized a ‘new’ version of the Ionic Order) in 1615, and Perrault in 1676. [3]

Proportion

One of the most important ideals of classical architecture is that the part relates to the whole, at all scales, and in very particular ways. The most common relationship is between constituent parts and the module of one-half the diameter at the lower third of the column shaft. The proportions used to generate the orders are derived from relationships found commonly in the human body and elsewhere in nature, such as the spiral of a Nautilus shell and the proportions that leaves diminish on a fern bush stem. These relationships are latent, but are easily visible upon closer study.

The relationships delineated by the Orders are merely guidelines for the designer, offering base information from which individual design can begin. There are guidelines for most architectural elements, from brackets and scrolls, to roof shapes and pitches, to superimposed (stacked) Orders. The point-of-departure that the Canon provides is evident in the variety of Orders found from one classical building to another, with pure canonical Orders very rarely built.

There are four primary relationships that columns have with walls. The first is freestanding, where the column is completely separate from the wall. As the column engages the wall, the three-quarter column (sometimes 5/8) is the first level of amalgamation, then the half-column, followed by the pilaster, which is an engaged pier that usually projects from one-quarter to one-sixth its width.

Profiles

Profiles are the smallest units of classical architecture. Profiles are combined to produce every element, no matter how large or small. The variations on the complex profiles are endless, and with variations in scale, an infinite number of light and shadow sequences can be created.

One of the largest profiles is the entasis of columns, which is the name for the taper of the column shaft as it rises toward the capital. There are several methods for drawing the entasis of columns, each of which is valid, and the particular use of which depends on the context and circumstances of the project, client, and designer.

Other profiles can be segregated into two categories, simple and complex. Simple profiles are singular geometric shapes in section, and include the bead, torus, fillet, fascia, cavetto, and ovolo. The complex profiles are generated by the use of more than one curve in series, and include the cyma recta, cyma reversa, thumb mold, beak mold, and scotia. The Industrial Revolution made the profiles accessible to everyone, from builders to furniture makers, who were (and still are) able to select profiles from a catalog rendered in their materials of choice. These pre-fabricated profiles were then (and still are) assembled according to guidelines provided by precedent and Canon to produce meaningful classical architecture.

Ornament

One of the aspects common in almost all types of traditional building, regardless of the language, is ornament. Ornament is the adornment of the building, much as man has naturally adorned himself throughout history with jewelry and paint.

There are virtually endless kinds of ornament that can be classified as classical. Nature is the chief inspiration for classical ornamentation, ranging from the smallest leaf to the largest animal. The human figure has also been an ornament generator, as have geometric patterns. Some ornaments have traditionally become associated with particular profiles, such as the egg-and-dart with the ovolo, the leaf-and-dart with the cyma reversa, and the bead-and-reel with the bead profile.

The Acanthus plant has a long-standing tradition as a primary element of classical ornament. The Corinthian and Composite capitals have abstracted Acanthus leaves as primary elements, to show the depth to which the Acanthus has been integrated. Just as most ornamentation has traditional associations, the symbolism and meaning associated with the Acanthus is that of enduring life, and the plant is traditionally displayed at funerary celebrations. The Acanthus plant from the Mediterranean is more-or-less a hardy weed, much like Kudzu is in the eastern United States.

Conclusion

All of the content in this article is just the dust on the tip of the iceberg that is classical architecture. Developing an understanding of the classical language of architecture is no easy task. Even when an understanding is attained, only the first step has been taken, because like many other complex ideas and systems, a mere understanding facilitates more complex questions, which can lead to issues and questions of morality and deeper philosophies.

Windows of course go a long way when it comes to lighting a room, but when your limited to natural light you can brighten up a room in many other ways. Wall color and accent colors can add to the illusion of lighter, brighter space, and well-organized lamps can increase the brightness factor in any room.

Helping Mother Nature

Start with natural light. Make sure that your windows are clean and dress them with fabrics that do not obstruct the light. Light-colored fabrics work well. Hanging a mirror on the wall opposite the window helps to enhance natural light, which is already in the room.

To illuminate the whole room, track lighting and recessed lighting are reasonable options. Track lighting can light the whole space, or be directed at specific areas in the room, while the recessed lighting installs flush to the ceiling, providing a smooth layer of light throughout the room. Select the most natural glow – use soft, white incandescent bulbs in your fixtures.

One effective way to illuminate a room is to thin or dramatically bounce the light from the ceiling. You can use wall sconces, lamps hidden in the crown molding, or even the high lights. A lamp is also great for the task lighting for reading or work.

Even brighter color

When painting your walls, use pale colors such as neutral or pastel; this will allow light to bounce off the walls making the room brighter. Keeping simple wallpaper patterns and flooring on the brighter side, you increase the amount of light distributed around the room.

Using a neutral background also provides an ideal opportunity to decorate your room. Dark woods and fabrics really stand out as they contrast with the pale color of the walls and floor, and in turn, make the room seem even brighter.

Accessories can brighten any room

Adding a brilliant material in a room with accents and accessories will be of great importance to maintain a light and airy ambiance. Including furniture with polished surfaces such as glass or metal will make the room feel brighter and full of motion as the light bounce off the walls and furniture. Adding silver and crystal accessories will further enhance the energy of light in the room.

Reflective tiles around a fireplace will help brighten up the focal point of a room. The mirror surface can be strategically located near sources of light to reflect the brightness back into the room.

Then select some of your favorite works of art or a brightly patterned area rug and pull the accent color for use in your pillows, vases, and lamps. Adding herbs and flowers to a space will also help to add brightness to any room.

One of the things that I like about living in San Francisco is the unique house plans. In a lot of areas in this country, people use their money to build mega-mansions. Rather than going for graceful, interesting houses that express something, they simply try to build the biggest, most expensive thing that they can to show off their wealth. For me, this isn’t the way to do it. The great thing about having some money is being able to express yourself in your living situation. A unique custom house plan can do this.

On the street that I live on, there are many different unique house plans to look at. You might see an Art Deco house right next to a traditional Tudor and beyond that, a house that looks sort of like an old-style barnyard except larger. Although I don’t like all of these unique house plans, (some of them are downright ugly) I do admire their willingness to take risks. And with risks, there are occasionally great acts of beauty.

You can see most of the unique house plans up in the hills. There are houses there that are built reflecting the workings of the great architect Frank Lloyd Wright. The designs of the houses are awesome and fit well with the surroundings. The houses have walkways, beautiful gardens, large windows, and other styles that make the houses unique.

Coming up with your own unique house plan is kind of difficult as I figured out myself. There are plenty of unique designs, but finding the perfect one can be a painstaking process. In my case, I had to look at well over a hundred different designs before I found the perfect unique house plan.

It actually was one of the plans I had initially considered, but when I looked at it in more detail it was perfect. It was spacious, interesting, and well-designed for entertaining in such a favorable climate. There is plenty of outdoor space surrounded by awnings which protect it from the wind. Since the weather is so mild there, this meant that I had the ability to entertain outside year-round. This is a great luxury for someone who enjoys inviting a lot of guests over to their house. I certainly have taken advantage of it since then.

In today’s world of instant gratification, we sometimes shoot ourselves in the foot, so to speak. This is especially true when we’re decorating our homes. If you’re just starting out, you want your rooms to provide just the right ambience, right away. Often, the problem is that you can’t afford all those good looks in one fell swoop. If you use a credit card to finance a complete room, with all the lovely room decorations you can find in one or two shopping trips, you may well regret this approach shortly.

Just like making friends, it usually takes time to grow a relationship. Sure, there are times you meet someone and the two of you hit it off right away and remain friends forever. Those encounters are rare. It’s the same with furnishing rooms and choosing room decorations.

Young people tend to become easy victims of decoramania. You want to invite your friends over and party in your newly furnished and fully equipped living room. This means plenty of fancy seating, an awesome stereo system and a assemblage of cool room decorations. Think of it this way: if you’re looking for the girlfriend or boyfriend of your dreams, you take your time. It could be years before you meet one person you really enjoy being with on a constant basis.

It won’t take years to find the right furnishings and room decorations, but it may take months. If you’re really smart, you’ll save your money so you can pay cash for each item that comes into your home. You save all those interest charges, can often negotiate better prices with cash in hand and you acquire stuff you really like.

You want to start by developing a theme and color scheme. If you’re first purchase is the stereo, this isn’t a worry. Your next addition may be a sofa or comfortable reading chair. Here’s where you need to pay attention to color.

Take your girlfriend or boyfriend with you on weekend outings to flea markets, antique shops, and garage sales to get the lowdown on styles and colors that you find appealing. Visit home furnishing shops and take a look at the sorts of room decorations they group together. Notice the various effects and size proportions. Pretty soon you’ll know what looks good to you and about what you should expect to pay.

Crafts fairs are great places to find artwork, wall hangings, statuary, retro lamps and other such choice room decorations. Get a feel for period pieces and unusual hand made ethnic type decorations that ring your bell.

All the while, save your money. When you see an item you can’t live without, buy it. Grow your room like a long term relationship. This approach works.

Umbria Design Studio is a young Interior Decorating firm serving Houston, TX and extended areas. Here in UDS we focus on quality as well as building long-lasting relationships with our clients. We provide the highest quality of design by combining talent with the best education and experience.

Vesselina Andreeva, the Principle Designer and owner of UDS, has 8 years of cumulative experience and training in Commercial and Residential Design. Born and raised in Bulgaria, Eastern Europe she has a wide cultural prospective on design. She graduated with an Interior Design Major from the College of Design at University of Minnesota, Saint Paul, MN.

After 8 years of working for Leading Architectural and Design Firms Vessi ventures on her own and soon after founds Umbria Design Studio. The name Umbria was inspired by her visit to Italy in 2002. Umbria is a region of Central Italy, bordered by Tuscany to the west, the Marche to the east and Lazio to the south.

Vessi’s credentials include professional membership in NEWH (The Hospitality Industry Network) and she is an allied member of ASID (American Society of Interior Designers).

For any commercial or residential design project, I will complete all project details from initial conception phase to the final installation and will make sure client satisfaction is the final outcome. I will provide an exceptional service at every level of the project including overall project management and will make sure all of your personal design style requirements are met.

Color, Space Planning, Finishes: floor, walls, hard surfaces, wood finishes, cabinetry, hardware moldings Furniture, Accessories, Artwork and much more.

I will come to your house, listen to your ideas, help you establish your particular design style, examine the needs for your space and come up with a practical plan to get the job done.

The environment we dwell in reflects as well as determines so much about what kind of unique personas we are. Some say environment is created by people and therefore, we the creators should be able to design our own environment to fit our unique needs and personal tastes. Others state that environment can impact us and change our ability to be creative, can motivate and sanction intimate and social behaviors. I believe both of these statements to be true. We create environment designed to suit our unique personal needs and tastes and in return the environments we create empower our creativity and make us the unique personas we are, impacting every part of the life we set ourselves to live.

Every project is a unique, one of a kind opportunity to impact someone’s life and to “color” their existence in the way it best showcases them to the world. Therefore I like to involve clients in every phase of the design process and to show them while we work together, one thing they never knew about themselves. We all are creative, we were made that way.
