A Review Of Plumbing Products

In spite of its blue-collar ties, plumbing is a complex and specialized trade. The number and variety of materials used in plumbing is higher than most other occupations where hands-on labor is concerned. Many plumbers complete extensive courses or extended apprenticeships in order to learn about each of the important materials used in plumbing.

Fittings are one of the most critical items for a plumber. Many of the plumbing problems reported by customers are often caused by improper fitting placement or broken fittings. Fittings are small materials which join different lines of piping or tubing. Typically, the fitting is inserted to alter the direction of a tube. They can also redirect the flow of the fluid inside the tubes or split the flow in certain areas.

One of the main elements of a fitting is its shape, which usually determines its function. Elbow pipes, for example, are installed to change a pipe’s direction, usually by 45 or 90 degrees. Tees, on the other hand, combine or split the flow in an area of piping. Plugs close off the end of a tube, while a barb joins a flexible hose to the end of a tube. Each of these fittings may consist of a number of materials, including copper, brass, cast iron and stainless steel. Increasingly, the businesses which create these items for the plumbing industry are moving towards using only products which are resistant to both corrosion and rust. This results in more durable fittings which require fewer replacements and repairs.

Of course, piping is just as critical to the plumbing industry as fittings. Similar to fittings, the pipes can be made from a variety of materials. Carbon steel, PVC, fiberglass and stainless steel pipes are becoming more popular choices thanks to their strength and durability. Pipes are usually made for specific uses. For instance, a threaded pipe has grooved ends that allow it to be screwed onto adjoining pipes. Plumbers must also learn which diameter and length of piping to utilize for different purposes.

Beyond these basic materials are the more obvious needs for the plumbing trade. Flush valves and toilets are needed for a bathroom, while faucets and sinks are needed in a variety of kitchen, bathroom, garage and manufacturing settings. The installation of drains represents another critical part of plumbing which can be applied in a wide variety of business, home or industrial locations. Additional specialty products are also important for plumbing, such as water fountains, water coolers or outdoor hoses.

Plumbers regularly respond to requests from homeowners or business owners who need their specialized skills in the plumbing industry. In addition to having a thorough understanding of the varied products used in this trade, plumbers must also have a knack for problem-solving and forming better solutions for inferior plumbing systems.

Experiencing siphonage from fixture traps ?

WHAT IS SIPONAGE IN PLUMBING ? HOW DOES IT APPLY ?

A siphon is defined as a pipe or tube shped liked inverted U shape with unequal legs.

The siphon is used to draw liquid over the edge of the vessel and deliever it to a lower level by utiliazing atmospheric pressure.

EXAMPLE :

The operation of a siphon is based on the unequal weights of water in the two legs due to differences in length.

If air should be allowed to enter the siphon at any point in either leg above the water level in the container, the siphon will be broken and water will stop flowing. Sewer gases are a very serious problem and should be fixed immediately.

A plumbing fixture is a receptacle or plumbing device installed in a plumbing drainage system that captures and directs water waste (plumbing sewer water & clean water) into the plumbing drainage system. Fixtures also include floor drains.

WHAT IS A FIXTURE OUTLET PIPE ?

Also known as F.O.P, a fixture outlet pipe is a plumbing pipe that connects the waste opening of a fixture or device to its protecting fixture p-trap.

WHAT IS A DEVELOPED LENGTH IN PLUMBING ?

A developed length in plumbing is a linear length measurement taken along the center line of a pipe and includes all changes in direction. the maximum developed length of a plumbing fixture outlet pipe (F.O.P) is 1200mm. 1200mm is 48 inches = 4 feet.

WHAT IS A FIXTURE UNIT FOR DRAINAGE SYSTEMS ?

A fixture unit is a unit of measurement based on :

a) the rate of water supply to that plumbing fixture

b) the total time of its operation

c) the frequency of the fixtures use

A fixture unit rating expresses the hydraulic load that is imposed on the complete drainage system by the fixture used for sizing purposes.

If a fixture outlet pipe is 1 1/4″, the fixture unit rating is 1 Fixture Units

If a fixture outlet pipe is 1 1/2″, the fixture unit rating is 2 Fixture Units

If a fixture outlet pipe is 2″, the fixture unit rating is 3 Fixture Units

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF VENTING IN PLUMBING ?

The venting of a plumbing system is the part of the drainage system designed to provide the free circulation of air throughout the system and maintain atmospheric pressure with the entire plumbing drainage system.

When a liquid waste is discharged into the plumbing drainage system piping, air is displaced by the waste; This in turn changes pressure in the
system. It is necessary to provide an escape route for any excess pressure and supply routes to draw in “make up air” to relieve vacuum conditions whenever they occur. Failure to do this can cause the drainage system to fail or malfunction. Consequently, a significant amount of the drainage pipe is empty. The main purpose of venting in plumbing is to prevent trap loss and trap seal siphonage.

How Do I Choose The Right Plumber

It is common knowledge that plumbing is the trade of skilfullyworking with pipe fittings, tubing and plumbing fixtures for drinking water systems and the drainage of waste. Aside from repairs and fixations, maintenance is also important. Who would like to have cold water while showering or no water at wall during an entire day. What do they always say? Prevention is better than cure. That is why maintenance is better and less costly than repairs.

While completing your own repairs could be a sensible idea for tiny plumbing issues, it can essentially end up being a really bad thing to attempt on major, serious upkeep roles in your house. Take, as an example
Replacing a hot water heater or a geyser valve. Other issues that you are the most likely to encounter are:
- You have a bursted pipe and water damp is threatening to damage your carpet.
- Drain cleaning – stormwater pipes
- Low water pressure or no hot water at all
- Leaking toilets, baths, basins, showers, bidets, sinks

How do i choose the best plumber for the job
One day or another you will required the assistance of a Plumber. Renting the service of a plumber can become an expensive exrecise. But with only some simple rules to follow you will be able to get the most of it..
You first need to find a reliable plumber, and the best way to do so is by simply asking your neighbors, builders or even real estate agents. If a plumer is reliable he will surely be recommended by at least one of them.. Nothing holds up a home sale faster than plumbing problems, so realtors often have a list of reliable, fast-response plumbers.

How do i choose the best plumbing supplies for the job
It is of utter importance to choose the right plumbing material. The plumbing material should be able to withstand wear and tear for years. This eliminates the possibility of wastage of water due to leakage. All selected materials shoould preferably be environment friendly

Consumption is very important in every household and the water will still be trap in these plumbing materials even once the consumption is over.. Thus it is imperative that the hardware used for plumbing is oxidization resistant and highly durable. Also, you need to make sure that the hardware can withstand extreme temperatures.

Dont do it yourself and take the risk to cause more damage. Call a plumber, but just make sure he is the best man around or you are taking the risk to pay much more than necessary and rememeber to choose the right plumbing goods as well.

The Parts Of The Toilet Outlet

When a toilet become wobbly or leaks at the bottom, it usually indicates a problem in the connection between the toilet and the closet flange the part that connects the toilet drain to the drain pipe. Alternatives include repairing the toilet or replacing it. Another challenge to a toilet is the need to put in new bathroom flooring. When the floor level is raised an inch or more, it becomes difficult for the toilet to sit squarely on the closet flange, and as a result a toilet leak may develop.

Understanding the parts of the toilet which create a connection between the toilet flange and the toilet outlet, are useful to the homeowner faced with a wobbly toilet or leaking toilet. The word flange is believed to derive from the Old French word flanche or flank or side. A toilet flange is shaped like a ring attached to the top of a hollow metal cylinder piece. The cylindrical walls fit down into the toilet drain pipe, and are bolstered at they fits against the inside of the toilet drain pipe. Because the piece is supported by its contact with the inside of the drain pipe, it is described as a type of flange. The word toilet in the phrase toilet flange comes from the old European word for bathroom the water closet.

A wax piece called a wax ring or wax seal fit on top of the closet flange and will serve to make the seal with the bottom of the toilet. The wax ring is alternatively called the wax ring, wax seal, water closet gasket, gasket, sealing plastic annular piece. The wax ring can be placed inside the closet flange or over the horn of the toilet outlet. In either case, as the toilet is placed down on the closet flange the weight of the toilet will compress the wax ring and make a tight seal.

These two bolts are alternatively called bolts, toilet bolts, closet bolts or hold-down bolts. As the toilet is being placed squarely on the flange the hold down bolts will come up through holes on either side of the toilet base. The toilet bolts are then held in place with three pieces. A plastic washer fits over the bolt first. A brass washer is placed on top of the plastic washer and a brass nut is carefully screwed on top of the brass washer. The brass nut is tightened sufficiently to hold the toilet in place, but not too tight so as to crack the porcelain toilet. A decorative cap, alternatively called a cap bolt, cap or trim cap is placed on top of the hold down bolts. The weight of the toilet and the bolts plus a layer of plumbers putty places all around the inside of the toilet base, is sufficient to create a good tight toilet deal with the toilet drain pipe.

A Stpe By Stpe Guide To Repairing A Running Toilet

Fixing a running toilet is one of the basic toilet repair jobs. Often the problem can be diagnosed and even repaired by an amateur plumber. There are a number of good how to articles on the Internet. In this summary article, I have put together the best suggestions from other articles in order to come up with the perfect flow sheet for diagnosing the cause of a running toilet.

1) The first step is to open up the top of the tank and peer inside:

2) If the tank is full and the flapper is closed and water is running over the top of the overflow tube. Then the flapper is working properly, but the fill valve is working improperly.
a. Turn off the water at the toilet shut off valve
b. Check for a misalignment of the float arm. A misalignment of the float arm allows the water to rise too high and therefore to trickle over into the overflow pipe and continually run into the toilet.
i. Pull up on the float with your hand. If this action stops the flow then adjust the level of the float.
1. If the float is around the valve post, pinch the metal clip and slide the float down the wire.
2. If the float screws in, try unscrewing it a bit and moving it further down the float arm.
3. If there is a ball on an arm, try turning the small screws on top of the valve. Sometimes, you can also bend the arm further down.
4. Make sure the float ball isn’t touching anything else
5. Make sure the float ball isn’t leaking or filling with water.
6. No matter how you adjust the float ball, adjust it so the tank stops filling when the water is about an inch, (2.5cm), below the to;p of the overflow tube.

3) If the flapper won’t close: close the flapper if that stops the leak, consider the following:
a. Is the chain catching on something? dislodged or tangled
b. Is the flapper catching on the chain?
c. Is the float connected too low on a flapper chain (flapper chain float not the ball float) Try raising the float to see if this solves the problem.
d. If none of the above maneuvers solved the problem consider the following:
i. Is the flapper aligned with the opening?
ii. Is the flapper discolored on the bottom, (continuous leak)
iii. Is the flapper simply just old and stiff (and needs replacing)?
iv. If you answered yes to any of these questions, then the problem is an old torn or worn out flapper assembly
v. Replace the flapper

4) Some toilets close the flush valve with a ball seal and not a flapper. If you have this type of toilet, check to make sure that the lift wire lifts the ball straight up, and that the ball moves freely

5) Sometimes the leak is the results of sediment and water deposit build-up in the flush valve seat, this can prevent the rubber flapper from dropping into the seat properly, and leads to a leak.
a. Try thoroughly scrubbing and cleaning the valve seat and see if that stops the leak.

6) If the toilet runs intermittently, then, in all likelihood you have a slow leak.
a. Place a dye tablet or a few drops of food coloring in the tank if after an hour or two without flushing, you see this dye in the bowl, you have a slow leak
i. The most common cause of slow leaks is a leaky flapper
1. Cleaning may work usually best just to replace the whole flapper
b. Replacing the flapper:
i. To perform the replacement, simply close the valve sticking out of the wall under your toilet tank,
ii. Flush the toilet
iii. Pop the old flapper off its hinges, disconnect it from the chain, and pop the new one into place
iv. Run a finger carefully around the rim where the flapper seats
v. Remove any uneven buildup of minerals that might cause a leak
vi. Use a sponge with bleach to clean the flapper seat.
vii. Open the valve all the way
viii. Try flushing a few times
ix. Trim and adjust the chain by trial and error

7) Occasionally, the valve on the fill tube is low, and close to the water level, the valve may act like siphon and pull water back into the fill tube.
a. Adjust the valve height or tube height up, or adjust the water level down.

8) If water is leaking through the fill valve, you need to consider replacing one or more of its parts or else the whole fill valve
a. If the rubber seals are worn, replace the rubber seals
b. One or more of the non-rubber components may break in the toilet’s water valve mechanism: -
i. Try fixing the broken part with epoxy
c. Replace the whole valve.

Analyzing A Plumbing Company Video

The Check Out A Better Las Vegas Plumbing Video is found on You Tube, and is an example of a plumbing website video.. The video is found at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aVKh_LaGVbQ The business video has some important segments that would enhance any plumbing company video, and some sections that I feel could warrant improvement.

In the opening scene of the video, we see Monte open the door of his truck, greet the residents of Los Vegas, and then walk off. He says to “Los Vegas,” that “We want your business.” The opening is personal and the shot of the truck is very attractive. The lettering on the truck is three toned with the company name in blue with black highlighting, the message “Better Service,” is in red, and the subtext, “Commercial Residential, Construction…” is in black. The phone number is emblazoned in blue with black highlighting.

The panel view of the truck provides all the essential info about the company. The director then appears. While genuine I find his message slightly stilted. Other approaches to a company intro that I like have included members of a landscaping team conferencing in the morning, before hitting the hedges. The idea of seeing the workers in action has a taste of reality, which I believe reaches people quicker. This intro looks staged, and therefore might not have the impact a non-staged intro has. Not everyone might agree with me.

In the second video segment we see Monte searching for a hidden slab leak using the latest electronic leak detector. The segment features shots of the equipment, and I believe that has appeal for viewers. Monte detects the leak, however, we do not hear the beep, beep, beep sound that the detector might use to pick up the leak. Sounds of the actual moment of detection would have made that segment more realistic.

In the third segment, we watch as Monte undertakes a video inspection of a clogged drain line. People definitely like seeing a plumber use video inspection. Such footage is educational, as the public may not have seen video inspection before, and it is trust building, as it shows us the company has the latest sophisticated equipment and knows how to use them. My one concern with this segment is that when Monte finds the leak and turns the monitor towards the camera, we really have trouble seeing any type of leak on the screen. Then a caption tells us “look at what we found,” We then see a hydro jet cleaner cleansing out a drain tube. We see the hydro jet cleaning out a sparkling new sewer line, but we don’t see any type of blockage that is being broken up, which makes the shot seem artificial. On the other hand, the fact that the company owns and uses a hydro jet, will foster trust in the viewer.

The caption of the final scene is “water heater installation.” We see the new water heater already installed with ropes still holding it in place. We don’t see before or after shots of the installation. Maybe before and after shots are becoming trite, maybe not.

The video ends with Monte and his family standing in front of the truck and saying “Hey Las Vegas,” give us a call. Then the daughters giggle.

An obvious conclusion about this video is that the company making it decided to stage scenes rather than use raw footage of actual plumbing repair and installation. Monte was well groomed, wearing a new uniform had good eye contact and stage presence. As he strides out of the truck, he looks like a Hollywood actor, who knows how to turn a simple action into a work of art.

The question is whether turning a business video into a Hollywood production will increase its effectiveness or to a certain extent take away from it. Or put another way, even if you want to stage a business video and create a high quality visual appearance, how much genuine down to earth, believable footage should you add back in. We can see that Monte knows how to use a leak detector and a video inspection camera, but does he know how to use a plumbing wrench? The video has some down to earth visual material of the plumber at work, the question is whether a bit more would have been useful or not.

The video includes certain types of visual material, which are going to enhance any plumbing video. Shots of the owner or shots of the co-owners and workers is known to help build trust. Shots of the family, might help build trust as it shows us the plumber is a solid family man. Shots of equipment the company owns and uses in the act of fixing common plumbing problems, definitely build trust. Shots of a company truck helps build trust, as it means they have radio dispatched plumbing truck(s) to provide service. And that’s something we expect in a modern plumbing company.

While the video is top heavy in its selections, showing the plumber using only the most sophisticated equipment, It allows the viewer to assume that a company that can use that sophisticated equipment can also fix a toilet with a wrench. Personally, I believe at least one shot of the plumber using a wrench while fixing a common plumbing problem would have added believability.

What A Difference Distinctive Narration Can Make In A Restaurant Video

The start of mastery of toilet repair is to learn the names of the various parts of the toilet. Some of the parts are known by more than one name, and learning the various slang terms helps to explain their purpose. The parts can be learned in terms of the path water takes when flowing through the toilet.

Three parts of the toilet are made of the familiar porcelain china with which we are familiar. These three parts are the toilet tank, the toilet tank lid and the cistern. Now having got that out of the way, we can follow the path of water through the toilet, and learn the names of the toilet parts.

The water travels through three parts to reach the toilet. It enters via the” line from the main,”, or “water line.” It travels past the “shut-off valve.” And it travels up the “supply line,” or “fill tube.” As the water reaches the toilet, it flow through the regulator fill valve. This valve is variously called, the the “refill valve,” “filler valve,” the float valve,” and the “ballcock valve.” The term float valve is the most generic term and refers across many applications to a valve which is shut off when the water flowing through the valve reaches a certain level. The term ballcock is the most descriptive of the terms and explains how the valve works. The valve consists of a ball and a cock. The ball end of the valve floats on water in the float valve chamber. In this case, the float vlave chamber is the cistern of the toilet, where water is stored. As the water, in the float valve chamber rises, the ball rises. The ball is connected by an arm to the valve. When the ball rises sufficiently, it changes the angle of the connecting arm and cock part of the valve so that the valve works to shut off water flow. The word cock refers to the part of the valve in the end of the supply line which changes position as the ball rises, until it stops off the water flow. The word cock, comes from the the position a rooster makes when it crows, as it tilts its head back slightly in a readying position.

The word cock can variously refer to a mechanism of a gun pulled back like the roosters head to ready the gun to shoot, or to a part in a valve which shifts it s position to turn the valve on or off. The floating ball is variously referred to as a “float ball,” or a “filler float,”

During filling, the water level in the cistern rises until an inch or two below the top of the “overflow tube.” It is prevented from flowing into the toilet bowl by the “flush valve.” The flush valve consists of a “flapper,” or “flapper ball,” or “tapered float ball,” or “flapper stopper” or “tankball,” which sits in the flush seat, and prevents water from flowing into the toilet bowl. The flapper piece is connected to a chain which is connected to the flush handle by a chain. When the toilet handle is pulled, the chain lifts up and the flapper lifts up and water flows into the bowl.

Newer dual flush toilets use buttons instead of handles to trigger the flush, however, even modern toilets still have a fill valve and flush valve mechanism.
